Happy [Belated] New Years!

January 12, 2015 § Leave a comment

It’s been a very busy few weeks. After graduation we had the holidays of course and then I started a fellowship at the International Business Times. I thought I’d share my stories with you, so I’ll do them by day…

Graduation Day!

Woah — it’s been a month since I updated this, and I am so sorry for that. It’s been a very hectic month — filled with lots of all nighters, lots of data and lots of tightening of loose ends. Why? Because today I graduated with my Master’s!

It’s been a long time coming. It’s involved a lot of hard work, dedication, devotion, laughs and tears, and coffee.

It has also involved a lot of support from incredible people. I have been so lucky to work with such amazing professors, especially at my grad school, and such wonderful editors — people who gave me a chance without even knowing me and with whom I have been able to develop great relationships. Having these people to work with makes your job even easier, and when you pair that with simply loving what you do, there’s just no comparison. But I also am so thankful for my family, boyfriend and friends. They listened to me go on and on about all my work, they’ve encouraged me when I was facing a tough time, they were patient when I ran out of the room to take a call and they always cheered me on. Always.

I have grown so much, and due very much in part to my educational experiences as well as my extracurriculars (because I always made sure I was working on my journalism while going to school!) And there is so much more to come!

WSJ – “Q&A: Matt Haze on Tweeting as a Christmas Tree”

November 18, 2014 § Leave a comment

I love my job. Who else can say they interviewed the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree?

Sure… the tree didn’t have much to say. But the comedian behind the tree’s Twitter account did, and it was a fun interview and write up.

And the Twitterverse is loving it!

NYT Lens: An Elusive Roof of One’s Own in Lisbon

This was my first real story for the NYT Lens blog and I am really proud of it. It was a pleasure to see the whole process through — from assigning it, interviewing the photographer, writing it up, sequencing the photos and putting it on the page to publish.

I did a follow up story to yesterday’s post on the catcalling video by speaking with some of the people who had responded in the form.

This PSA on street harassment video has gone viral. I contributed to this story and think it came out quite nice.
